Flames, Mikael Backlund agree to 2-year extension: Why did he decide to stay?

The Calgary Flames and Mikael Backlund agreed to a two-year extension, the team announced Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know:

The deal carries an average annual value of around $4.5 million, per reports.
With the extension, Backlund was named the 21st captain in team history.
In 82 games with the Flames last season, the 34-year-old had a career season with 19 goals and a career-high 37 assists.
Backlund has played all 15 seasons of his NHL career in Calgary.
