The Edmonton Oilers released Brandon Sutter from his professional tryout offer and the veteran center retired from the NHL on Sunday, the team announced.
Sutter was attempting to make a comeback after missing almost 2 1/2 years because of long-COVID symptoms. His last NHL regular-season game was in May 2021 with the Vancouver Canucks.
The 34-year-old forward appeared in three of Edmonton’s first five preseason games, the last coming Saturday night in Vancouver. Overall, he performed adequately, especially given the long layoff.
